Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. John's,
We are so excited about everything happening this coming week in the parish and I would like to invite you to be an active part of our thriving parish community.
FATHER GEORGE ASIGRE, our Associate Pastor and Catholic Chaplain at Baltimore-Washington Medical Center since May, is celebrating a special Mass on Saturday evening, August 27 at 5:15 PM marking his 25th anniversary of priesthood. I hope you'll come out to celebrate and pray with him! This will be a wonderful celebration, with some light refreshments in the Gathering Space afterwards. If you would like to bring a card of appreciation for Fr. George, there will be a basket at the reception.
We have a multitude of Adult Faith Opportunities in our parish that I hope you will consider investigating this week. There will be a table in the Gathering Space where, between masses you receiving information about Walking With Purpose for women, That Man is You for men, Bible Study for seniors, a new study of the Bible for all, and several smaller programs that will be meeting in homes this year. You can learn more at
www.stjohnsp.org/adult-faith.
In a few weeks we will be introducing a new hymnal to replace the disposable
Breaking Bread hymnal. The decision was made to purchase the
One in Faith hymnal as it includes the scripture readings for Mass, many prayers and devotions, and a good selection of music as well. Most "permanent" hymnals have a shelf life of at least 10 years. Rather than purchase new disposable hymnals each year, this approach is more cost effective and certainly more environmentally conscious. If you would like to contribute to the fund to purchase the hymnals, and include a memorial inside one or more of them, you may download the donation sheet attached to this email and return it to the Parish Office or place it in an envelope in the collection.
We'd like to WELCOME the students of St. John the Evangelist back as the new school year at St. John's begins this Monday! Our parish-wide theme this year is based on 1 Peter 2:5:
You are like LIVING STONES being built into a spiritual house. Be on the lookout for stones, construction hats, and a community actively building our relationships with Jesus Christ, one another and the larger community as we seek to build the Kingdom of God.
A gentle reminder to drive slowly and attentively on our property, as well as to avoid parking in areas designated as "no parking" to insure the safety of our children, fellow worshippers, and visitors to our church.
Have a wonderful week and phenomenal school year!
Your brother in the Lord,
Fr. Jim Proffitt
