The Lord is GOOD!
Let us enter the new calendar year with all praise to God for His Goodness! We can think of multiple blessings for which we are thankful, especially throughout the recent Christmas season and holiday. Whether it was visiting family and friends, time off work and school, the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of Christmas, or any number of things, we are grateful for His presence and blessing in our lives.
We honor the Lord when we acknowledge Him and His attributes as we pray. This month, let's concentrate on His Goodness. Nothing bad comes from God, because He is All-Good. Anything good here on earth is from Him, who is the Creator. Each person is created in His image and likeness, with Goodness part of that. So, each person has Goodness in him or her. We love everyone because of this Truth: we are made in the image and likeness of God. We seek the Good in others first, because we and they have it in them. Take some time to speak about the Good you see in your family. Tell your spouse and children what is Good about them. When we look for the Good, we are being like God, we are growing in holiness.
Christian Parenting Tip:
When correcting our children, we need to make sure they know that we are correcting their behavior, not their being. This means we tell them, "You are a good girl (or boy). Your choices and behaviors are not so good." Then tell them exactly what choices and/or behaviors are out of line. The consequences should be directed to correct the bad behavior and replace it with good behaviors. For instance, if the child is talking back to you, the consequences should include having them think of better words or phrases or tones of voice they can use instead, practice these with them. Give them the tools to do better next time, in addition to the negative consequences of taking away privileges or toys, or a time out. The point is to make sure they understand that you are punishing their behavior and desire them to do better because you love them and you want them to grow in holiness.
