Mission Trip
Oakland, CA
July 4th - July 11
YNIA is for current Freshman thru Seniors. They seem to be willing to bend the rules a little, as we have come across soon to be freshman in Great Falls and Yakima. I personally am a little hesitant to have current 8th graders participate, because it is such long and hard trip. I don't want anyone to have a bad experience because they are a little young. They will also be younger than most other participants which could possibly make them feel a little isolated. If any current 8th graders are desperate to participate and feel they can't wait one more year, I am willing to talk to parents about the possibility. This would be on a case by case basis and I can't make any promises until I talk to YNIA.
Some of you have asked about the dead line to add/drop. We have to have our team roster turned in by May 15. However, there is a max number of participants a site can take. It is a million times easier to drop members than it is to add them later on. If you are even a little interested in participating let me know now and turn in your $50 deposit as soon as you can.
Parent Contribution:
Deposit: $50 - Due as soon as you can. Reserves your spot
1st Payment: $100 - Due March 1
Final Payment: $260 - Due June 1
We usually manage to raise enough funds before the final payment is due. We will keep you informed on our fundraising efforts and let you know ahead of time if the final payment will be necessary.
Please don't let money be the reason your Youth misses out on this great experience. The parish will sponsor anyone who needs it and we will keep fundraising to make sure everyone is able to participate.
If your Youth needs a full or partial scholarship, please let me or Theresa Paul know.
Fundraising. The parent contribution covers the registration fees for YNIA. We as a group need to raise the funds for travel. Depending on our final number of participants we will need around $4,000 to $5,500 for rental cars, gas, and meals. We will continue to raise money until the trip is fully funded. Below are some of the fundraisers we talked about on Sunday. If you or your youth have any suggestions, please let me know.
- Current Fundraising.
- World's Finest Chocolate.
- I have ordered 50 cases and they should be here by the 24th. Please be ready to peddle chocolate to your friends, family, neighbors, etc.
- Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast.
- I have talked with our Grand Knight about a pancake breakfast and he will talk to the rest of the Knights about it tonight. I will update you more information as soon as possible.
- Little bags of Hope.
- I will talk to some parish organizations about getting the supplies sponsored. We will need to assemble and "sell".
- Spaghetti (or something) Lunch or Dinner
- It is wonderful to have so many parish organizations willing to support us and put on fundraisers for us. However, I think it would be great if we could organize an event for ourselves as well! Spaghetti or something along the same lines could be fun and easy way for us to raise funds.
- Linea will talk to Fr. and find some possible dates.
- We will need Youth willing to help set up, cook, serve and cleanup.
- Future Fundraising Ideas.
- Car Washes
- Once the weather improves we can look at dates & locations.
- Rake & Run / Snow Shovel & Shimmy
- Lentil Fest/Art Walk
Tentative Travel plans.
- July 4
- If we leave at 7:00 am we can be at St. Augustine's in Merrill, OR in time for 5:30 pm Mass. 9.25 hr drive. I am planning on 10 - 10.5 for lunch and pit stops. We should be able to watch fire works in Malin, OR (Linea & Daniel's home town 10 miles from St. Augustine)
- July 5
- We will need to leave no later than 7:00 am. 5.5 hr drive with no traffic or pit stops. We will need to feed ourselves before arriving at the school.
- July 10
- We will leave Oakland around noon and be back to St. Augustine's around 6:00 pm
- July 11
- We will leave around 7-8:00 am. Drivers will be tired, we will plan on taking our time. Linea will keep everyone updated on our progress so you know when to meet us at Sacred Heart.
Depending on how tired everyone is we have some great sight seeing opportunities including: Crater Lake, the Lava Beds in Tulelake, CA, the Official Linea & Daniel Hometown Tour, and more. We can discuss what we would like to do at future meetings.
