Why everyone loves a meal shared among friends
The last half of the Mass involves a meal among friends, a “sacred meal” where we are fed with the Body and Blood of Jesus, and are joined to God in communion.
The Eucharist follows the Biblical pattern of a “sacred banquet,” which occurs in many places in both the Old and the New Testament:
- Adam and Eve enjoying the abundance of the Garden
- The Passover meal in Egypt
- Jesus’ multiplication of the loaves and the fishes
- The Last Supper that Jesus had with his friends
