Who is afraid of the dark?
I am. Well not now but at one time I was. I may have been very young but still it was there-monsters under the bed and all that.
Darkness is sad, cold, foreboding. It is to be feared. It is not just the absence of light it is a place where we have trouble seeing clearly and maneuvering can be difficult. Darkness came before light but the light when it came reached into the darkness and it has never been the same. And darkness covered the earth… this was the 2nd thing mentioned in the beginning of Genesis, but it was not created it was just there. It existed in the absence of light and when the light came it took over. From the very beginning God defined light as good and separated it from the darkness. It exists only in the absence of light.
Anger, fear, aggression and the like are born of the dark. They inhibit and stall those captured there. Light breathes heat and light and color into things. “Anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness: for there is no gloom where but now there was distress…. :” because “the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;” Jesus says further in John’s Gospel: “I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” The yoke that burdened them is obliterated with his sacrifice.
So, let us no longer fear the darkness, but let us bask in the light of Christ who saves us from all harm. The light overcomes the darkness and fills our souls with delight. The darkness cannot hold us because light has entered in. Jesus chases away the “monsters under the bed”, and exposes them to the light.
But if for a little while we remain afraid of the dark take courage, wait for the Lord with courage and he will come and he will shed his lamp of salvation.
P.S. I sleep with the light off now!
