Father Godfrey's Homily
OT 05A 2020
St. Benedict Cathedral
A few years ago, it was made so clear to me in prayer: without ever setting out to be, I had become a clean-up man. In many of my assignments – no, I’m not leaving! – my work has involved clean-up. Even though I have loved the work, I didn’t much like the title! I didn’t like it at all, but it was true.
You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. These aren’t statements of fancy, but of fact. We are salt and light. We may not like those titles either, but we’re called to bring life, joy, peace, and flavor to the world. Like it or not, we are!
Brothers and sisters, these sweet words bring huge responsibility. Light provides for growth and shows the way. Do we? Salt preserves nourishment and enhances life. Do we? So easily, we choose the darkness and blandness of our sin. But we are, according to the One who knows, salt and light. Today, let’s courageously brighten the way of one who has wronged us. Let’s be light and shine for all!

An excerpt from the

We must, however, continually purify our language insofar as it is image-bound and imperfect, realizing that we can never fully express the infinite mystery of God.
