While the intimate chamber in the photo below may look like the perfect spot to reflect, relax, and revitalize, the stench may be a turnoff. Those of you who guessed it was a place to rot got it right!
Known as putridariums (most often used by nuns and monks), these rooms served as temporary crypts, housing corpses until all the decomposition liquids drained from the body. Living members of the order continued to care for the deceased, bathing them and changing their clothes from time to time, and visiting daily to pray.
At the completion of decomposition, the bones would be carefully washed and placed into an ossuary.
