This is one of my favorite times in the Church year.
First off, the Gospel this weekend describes Jesus “meeting up” with Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10). Being short of stature and unable to see who Jesus is, Zacchaeus chooses to climb a sycamore tree, a very tall tree, one without branches close to the ground. It seems a very difficult way to see who Jesus is, however, the encounter opens Zacchaeus’ heart, and salvation comes to his house that day.
There are plenty of metaphors for our contemplation in this lovely story. Zacchaeus is open to Jesus’ invitation. As for him, encountering Jesus can bring about conversion of life for us. What are the ways I choose to put my life in the right order? All of us are invited to salvation!
This week we commemorate the Feast of All Saints and observe All Souls’ Day. This blessed communion of saints is the bond we hold with those who have been canonized and the multitude of faithful followers of Christ - the Saints and the saints. We believe they have all entered eternal glory. Festivals as these remind us to be faithful in our own call to follow Jesus. We may be looking for a sycamore tree. We are all in this together.
Happy Autumn!
