A Message from Fr. Doerr...
By now, I imagine, stress and anxiety may be biting at your heels or invading the family dynamic. Let’s all pause and take a breath.
I noticed something about my family and me. We are all high-strung, doers (not just Doerrs!). But we have an awful habit of playing the “What if…” game. “What if this terrible thing happens?” or “What if that terrible thing happens?” And then, from there, is just deeper into “what if” scenarios! It is terrible; a game that can drive you absolutely nuts! I do not recommend playing the game!
Instead, contemplate one of the most beautiful writers of the Church, St. Francis de Sales. He offers a better way: “Do not think about what will happen tomorrow, for the same eternal Father who takes care of you today will look out for you tomorrow and always. Either he will keep you from evil or he will give you invincible courage to endure it. Remain in peace; rid your imagination of whatever troubles you.”
And, even more directly, Jesus says, “Fear is useless; what is needed is trust” (Luke 8:50). Maybe the anxiety has already crept in and you feel somewhat helpless. Know that trust is something that you need not manufacture in your own heart. If you only ask Our Lord, he will give it to you. Have great confidence that if you ask, he will hear your prayer and assist you. Reflect on the words of the Liturgy that we pray every day: “Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will.” Amen!
