Out from the Dark
He cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” (Jn 11:43)
In John’s Gospel, we have the story of the raising of Lazarus. (Jn 11:1-45) Lazarus has been in the tomb for four days. We hear Jesus call out in a loud voice “Lazarus, come out”. Lazarus rises and walks from the darkness of the tomb into the light. In these uncertain times, we too feel as though we are in the darkness of the tomb. The darkness is a frightening place. We feel darkness in our fears and anxieties, in our isolation and loneliness and in our ability to know and understand the future. Like Lazarus, Jesus calls us out of our own tombs and into the light. As we walk forward toward Him, we know that God is with us. We know that His Son is already victorious over death. We know the Easter promise is alive. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” (Jn 11:25-26). Jesus is calling us out of the darkness into the light. As we experience this Lenten season, let us be transformed from a people in darkness into a people of the Light.
