Sunday March 29th, 2020
5th Sunday of Lent
The Lord God told the people that soon the graves of the dead
would open and they would rise. “I will put my spirit in you that
you may live...says the Lord.”
“Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”
God, who raised Jesus from the dead, will raise also those in whom
the Spirit dwells.
Lazarus died, and Jesus raised him from death. Jesus said, “I am the
resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies,
will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”

“Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would never have died.” That’s what Martha said to Jesus. She couldn’t understand why Jesus waited, and allowed his friends to suffer anguish for days when he could have cured Lazarus right away? In our fears and sorrows, we have such questions and doubts. “Lord, if you’d been here, this wouldn’t be happening. Why do you delay? Where are you God? Why aren’t you answering my prayer?” Our loving God always hears us his children, but sometimes asks us to wait upon the Lord, to trust him more. And sometimes God has a better idea. Jesus assures his disciples that this illness will not end in death. It will become a powerful sign to inspire faith and show the glory of God. Jesus is more than a healer who makes people well and delays their dying. He is the Lord and Messiah who gives eternal life. “Your brother will rise.” He tells Martha. Then, “I AM the Resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live. And everyone who is alive and believes in me, will never die at all.” Jesus asks us, as he did Martha, “Do you believe this?” Yes, Lord, we do believe: By his death and resurrection, Jesus conquered the last enemy, death. Those taken from us in death are not lost to us forever. We have sure and certain hope that on the last day, they will rise with Christ. He is the Resurrection and the Life, who comes to dwell in us here and now, when we believe in Him and live in intimate union with him. In our anxiety and distress during the current crisis, let us confidently turn to Jesus, who, as true man, has compassion for us and weeps with us, and as Lord and Savior, the Resurrection and the Life, gives us eternal life.
