Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving our country in the U.S. military.
It was originally named "Decoration Day." This celebration started in the years following the Civil War (April 12, 1861 – April 9, 1865) and became an official federal holiday in 1971.
Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades, placing flowers and flags and other decorations at graves to honor the fallen.
Catholic Cemeteries often have special Mass at the cemeteries to honor those who died while serving our country. Unfortunately these have been canceled this year in the Phoenix area due to the coronavirus, but many parishes will have Mass on May 25th.

Veterans Day (in November) is distinct from Memorial Day (in May).
