PENTECOST SUNDAY!
This weekend is Pentecost, one of the great solemnities of the Church. Only Easter ranks higher!
Pentēkostē is the Greek name for the Feast of Weeks, a prominent feast in the calendar of ancient Israel celebrating the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai. This feast is still celebrated as Shavuot in Judaism. For Christians it became the feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other disciples of Jesus Christ as described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1-31). For this reason, it is often called the “Birthday of the Church.”
While those on whom the Spirit had descended were speaking in many languages, the Apostle Peter stood up with the Eleven and proclaimed to the crowd that this event was the fulfillment of God’s word: “I will pour out my spirit.” Three thousand people gladly received his word and were baptized that day. No wonder we call it our birthday!
The main sign of Pentecost is the color red, which symbolizes joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit. Our colors will be red. If you are able to make it to Mass you might think of wearing something red.
