Our Liturgical Calendar: PENTECOST
Jesus was talking about the Holy Spirit who He sent to be with us always. The Spirit that helps us and guides us through our lives. This weekend is Pentecost - the birthday of the Church, given life through the coming of the Holy Spirit. Jesus' promise fulfilled!
Happy Birthday Church! What a great opportunity for your Domestic Church (your Church of the Home) to celebrate. In the upcoming weeks, I will be sharing ideas for you to help get more out of Mass with your family. Whether you have chosen to return to Mass at St. Michael or you are continuing to "watch" at home, these suggestions will help your family make the most out of Mass.
Our faith formation curriculum encourages reading the Gospel before Mass on Sunday and then involves the kids in discussions and activities related to the Gospel. This makes it so that the readings are familiar to the kids, which makes mass more interesting and engaging for the kids.
HOW TO READ THE SCRIPTURES BEFORE SUNDAY MASS:
Choose one (or more) activities to complete one night before you attend or watch virtual mass this week:
- Read the readings for the upcoming Mass - child friendly version available here:Sunday Readings for Children. You can do this at dinner, bedtime or as an after dinner wind down activity.
- Have a family treasure hunt (Scripture is our Catholic treasure!) and challenge the kids to find the readings (cited on the link above) in their own (or your family) Bible. Compare the readings and talk about the different words, how they mean the same thing but might be said a little differently.
- Have the kids watch this "Allelu Show episode about Pentecost", especially good for younger kids and for older kids try "God Sends the Holy Spirit".
- Plan a birthday celebration for Sunday! Who doesn't need an excuse to celebrate right now!
- Pick out your outfits for mass and remember our St. Mike tradition...make sure to wear RED when you attend our watch mass this week!
