Dear Parents,
This is a very different kind of post than I usually write. I wanted to reach out to you, as some of us may be struggling with recent events, not only how to process all this ourselves, but also how to explain it to our children.
The events of the past week or so have been difficult. The violent death of George Floyd is inexcusable. The pain and suffering in the community is palpable, as is the demand for justice. It is encouraging to see people of all colors stand together during peaceful protests. We watched and read about these peaceful protests, and about other protests that devolved into vandalism, and looting that spread through neighborhoods and communities. We then saw people step forward to offer groceries, to help clean up, and to donate funds to help with rebuilding. There is still much work to be done by all of us to ensure justice for all people.
On Pentecost Sunday, we heard about disciples receiving the Holy Spirit, and being able to hear and understand others. In what ways may the Holy Spirit animate us to hear, understand, and help others? Jesus said, "Peace be with you." May we enter into prayer for the Floyd family, for the shattered communities, and for continued efforts to promote justice. In what ways can we be the peace of Christ to others?
Yesterday, June 1, we celebrated Mary, the Mother of the Church. Mary is the Mother for us all. A mother's love is special. All people deserve to be treated with dignity, respect and love. We can lift up all children of God to Our Mother Mary by praying the rosary more frequently in the coming weeks.
Below are some other resources offered for your consideration:
There is a JustFaith webinar this Thursday, June 4 called, Acting for Justice while Sheltering in Place. It will be from 7:00-8:30 PM. You may register on the button below if you are interested.
A parent discussion time is being offered as a time for parents to gather to pray, to talk frankly about recent events, racism and its impacts in our community and on our children, along with what steps we might take together. This will be on Monday, June 8 at 7:00 PM via Zoom. See the button below for the link.
The Holy Spirit Social Justice Commission is looking into offering JustMatters modules on Faith and Racial Justice. I will keep you posted.
In Christ,
Mary N
