Akita, Japan
In the 1970’s, Our Lady appeared to Sister Agnes Sasagawa in Akita, Japan, with the following message:
"The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against other bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres. Churches and altars will be sacked. The Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.”
We are Living in the Time of Crisis.
Our Lady said that the crisis will reach a critical point after the midpoint of the 20th century. What happened at that time? We had the societal and sexual revolution of the 1960’s, which radically challenged traditional faith and morals! There can be no denying that we are in the midst of the crisis Our Lady prophesied. Consider the following statistics from reputable sources:
The number of Catholics regularly attending Mass plummeted in the second half of the 20th century. In 1958, 3 out of 4 Catholics regularly attended Sunday Mass. By 2002, the number had dropped to only 1 in 4 (Catholic World Report, July 2007).
From 1965 to 2003, there was a 66% decrease among US religious sisters and a 94% decrease in teaching sisters (Index of Leading cCtholic Indicators, 2003).
Approximately 50% of US Catholic High Schools were closed from 1965 to 2002 (Index of Leading Catholic Indicators, 2003).
In 1965, there were 49,000 US seminarians in formation for the priesthood. By 2002, there were 4,700 - a decrease of 90%. In the same time frame, some 2/3 of the seminaries in the United States had to close their doors for lack of vocations.
Since 1965, a 50% decrease in US Catholic weddings has been accompanied by a 50% decrease in infant baptisms (Catholic World Report, July 2007). At the same time the number of Catholic annulments has soared from 338 in 1968 to over 50,000 in 2002 (National Catholic Register, July 2007).
The staggering amount of co-habitation, Catholic marriages that end in divorce, and legislation in favor of “gay marriage” make it quite clear that the prophecy has come true. We have only to turn on the radio, TV, or the Internet to see how the innocence of children is under constant assault. Immodest dress, sexual innuendo, violence, crude humor, easy access to pornography - have all become too common.
There is also failure of catechesis in the Church in the last 50 years. 70% of Catholics born after 1958 consider the Holy Eucharist a mere “symbolic reminder” of Jesus (Index of Leading Catholic Indicators, 2003).
There is so much confusion in the Church today. Doctrines that have been held by the Catholic Church since time immemorial are now being questioned. A good example is Christ’s teaching on divorce and re-marriage. Christ is very clear in today’s Gospel: Whoever divorces his spouse and marries another commits adultery. The Church has held for centuries that those in this situation are barred from receiving Holy Communion. Now, that perennial teaching of the Church is subject to debate. We see “cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against other bishops,” as Our Lady of Akita prophesied.
In this time of crisis, it is good to affirm the traditional teaching of the Church: No one has the authority to change Christ’s teaching - no power in heaven or on earth, neither an angel, nor the Pope, nor a council, nor a papal encyclical, nor a law of the bishops, has the faculty to change it (cf. Galatians 1:8). The First Vatican Council declared that the task of the Pope (and the bishops) is to hand on the faith to us unadulterated: “For the Holy Spirit was promised to the successors of Peter not so that they might, by his revelation, make known some new doctrine, but that, by his assistance, they might religiously guard and faithfully expound the revelation or deposit of faith transmitted by the apostles” (Pastor Aeternus, 6, July AD 1870).
The Chastisement
My brothers & sisters, we are in the midst of the great crisis of faith that Our Lady foretold in many of her apparitions. The sad thing is that most Catholics don’t even realize it. They go on with their lives as if this is normal, and it’s business as usual. Many are caught up in worldliness. There is so much lukewarmness, so much indifference, and many souls are perishing as a result.
The great evil in our world will surely bring down God’s chastisement if we don’t do anything about it, if we don’t turn away from sin. God’s punishment is a consequence of His love and mercy, “For whom the Lord loves He chastens” (Hebrews 12:6, Proverbs 3:11).
Our Lady of Akita warned: "If men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by My Son.”
That was in the 70’s. We’ve only gotten worse since that time! We now have over 58 million aborted babies (in the US alone) crying out to God for justice.
