My Dear St. Bernadette Family,
This next Sunday, we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ or Corpus Christi. Each year we pause to consider this wonderful gift God has given to us. This year perhaps more than ever we are aware of the importance of this gift after our several month fast from Communion.
It is great to be able once again to welcome more to our Masses and make the Body of Christ available for you. Receiving this gift is similar to signing ourselves in the name of the Trinity (last week’s celebration) in that we are called by the Lord to “do this in memory of Me.” The “this” is sacrificial love, giving our very self in service to God’s reign on earth which we do by choosing to love all people.
In this time of unrest, uncertainty and challenging changes it is important to focus on what is really important. The Body and Blood of Christ helps us to do so. In imitation of Him, in His memory, we die to self and live for God through love for our neighbor. We choose to love all persons, no matter their profession, the color of their skin, their gender or any other “accident” of creation. Each and every one is a child of God and has the Holy Spirit dwelling within. As much care as we give to the Eucharist, we ought to give the same profound respect to each person.
May God’s grace open our hearts to abundant love!
With love,
Fr. Tom
