"Whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple--amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward."

 Sometimes we entertain the idea of doing something great or important or with huge sacrifice in serving God, but most often the opportunities come in very small ways. Several wonderful saints named Theresa taught us about the “Little way” or “doing something beautiful for God.” Opportunities for acts of kindness are presented to us every day. A smile, an encouraging word, sharing a meal, teaching from our experience, sharing a thought or a prayer are small ways we make life better for another and express our faith. 

To “receive” another is to open our heart to them, lay aside our own ambitions and tend to their needs. Sometimes this is very hard to do as we so often dwell on our needs, wants and daily concerns. Here we can look to the example of Jesus who was often disrupted in His plans by people in need. He set aside His own agenda to deal with their needs giving them His full attention and in doing so offering healing, hope and love. Every day gives us opportunities, let’s get up in the morning looking for these little ways to serve.
