Final Thoughts
I am down to my last week as pastor of Emmaus. It is, of course, a bittersweet time. I look forward to what lies ahead for me as I explore the possibilities of retirement. I do know that that will be curtailed for a while because of the pandemic. With that, rather than lament, I have decided to be open to experiencing coming months as something of a retreat mode. I will take this time as an opportunity to read, reflect, pray, exercise compulsively as I always do and to engage in whatever other opportunities present themselves. Because of the increase in Covid 19 cases, I am going to refrain, in large measure, for a time, from making myself available to help out in other parishes. I look forward to doing that when it is safe to do so. Also, as I move on, I am leaving a place in which I have lived longer than anyplace except my hometown which I left at 21. These past 13½ years have been among the richest years of my life. I thank you for that and if I have had some success here it is because I was blessed to be among you as we worked together in the building up of this parish.
I met with Fr. David Leibham, your new pastor, last Monday. I spent much of the day with him. I gave him a tour of Emmaus and Queen of Angels. He had not been here before and he was quite amazed. I took him to lunch at Café Blue. He really liked that! And we talked a lot. At the end of the visit I felt very good about his coming here as your new pastor.
That said, I told him what we all know about the effect of Covid 19. That is that the parish he is taking over on Monday is, in many ways, not the parish that we have known. This has always been a very busy parish. Our buildings have always been full of ministry meetings, religious education for all ages, programs and retreats and so much more. These past four months have been a time of relative quiet. As you move forward with Fr. David, I have asked the pastoral and finance councils and the staff to help him to come to know what our parish has been and to help him when it can begin to fully reopen. I ask that of all of you as well. He will have a very difficult task ahead of him; however, I did tell him that, here at Emmaus, there are so many good people with wonderful skills and expertise with whom he can work to make good things happen just as you have done with me over the years. He was very pleased and excited to hear that.
This weekend is my last weekend with you. I counted up the weeks that I have been here and realized that I have spent 703 weeks with you here at Emmaus. I am grateful for every one of them. Some were more challenging than others, but it was all to a good end. I will preside at the 5:00 PM vigil on Saturday and at the 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM masses on Sunday. Please forgive me if I just say mass and preach the gospel. While it is my last weekend, our celebrating the mass together is the most important thing. I have already been through several weeks of good-byes. I thank all of you who came to the birthday/retirement gathering on June 18. I thank, as well, all of you who let me know that you did not feel safe in coming. I totally support your staying away from crowded gatherings. Thank you to so many for the many gifts of cash, checks, gift cards and wine. I must say that I am grateful to be pastor of a parish in which so many know good cabernets and pinot noirs! I did not tell Fr. David about that. I will let you surprise him with your excellent taste and refined palates. And thank you, as well, to all who contributed to the chalice that was presented to me at the June 18th gathering. I have been using it at all masses since and I will treasure it as I use it in masses to come.
As I leave Emmaus, please know that this parish will always be in my prayers. I know that God will continue to bless this parish as He has in the past because you are such good and faithful servants.
By the way, I did an exit interview reflecting on my years of priesthood and my time at Emmaus. You will soon be able to stream it from a link on our website.
Mensaje del Padre Samuel
Detalles finales...
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Samuel Hose
