At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” (From Matthew 14:22-36)
The water was turbulent, the waves were crashing all around them, the wind was howling, and these experienced fishermen who had spent their lives on the water were fearing for their lives...and so it may be with us. Teachers and parents fearful of what the school year will bring...doctors and nurses worried about their own lives as well as the lives of their patients...minorities risking their lives for equality...police officers fearful of being attacked and ambushed...students fearful of leaving the safety of their homes as they go off to college and face uncertainty...the poor and underemployed are fearful that the benefits they relied upon will be taken away... But, just as the Apostles were strengthened by Jesus when he entered into their boat, so will we be empowered and strengthened when we invite Jesus into our lives! Worry, anxiety, stress, and fear may remain, but with Jesus in our boat, all will be well for us in eternity! We still have to pick up our crosses daily and endure the difficulties of life, but with Jesus, we will have the strength to persevere and the mercy and love to bring us to Heaven when our days on earth are done! Invite Jesus into your boat, my sisters and brothers in Christ, and you will make it through the storms of 2020 and beyond! Amen!
