This Saturday was the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. Normally a holyday of obligation, the requirement to attend Mass today was dispensed. But – holyday or not – it is a day that we should reflect both as a means of dealing with the current crises and as a cause for hope.
If we are so concerned that we are surrounded by events outside of our control, ponder on what the young girl Mary must have experienced. Told by an angel that she would bear the Son of the Most High God, she became an unwed mother in a society where the penalty was death by stoning. Fortunately for her (and for us), she had a very understanding fiancée and a faith which saw her through that most difficult time. A beautiful and important example for us when we’re looking for an anchor in these unsettled times: a good support system and – whether that support system exists or not – an unwavering hope in the God who created and sustains us, trusting in the love that He continues to enfold us in.
Also, through this solemnity we see the outcome of that faith for Mary: a special place in Heaven as one received both body and soul into the Beatific Vision, which is something no other canonized saint can (yet) claim.
In our continuing struggle with sin and temptation, we can look to our Blessed Mother for the peace and confidence that just as her son looked out and cared for her; he wants to do for us as well. This way, no matter what life may throw at us, we will never lose sight of knowing that this life – a pilgrimage and not an end unto itself – always points us to what is beyond: the love which nothing has the power to separate us from, if we remain faithful.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

When needed, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will bring the Blessed Sacrament so that people in the Church Hall can receive Communion during Mass.
