Communique #15 – Communications
September 04, 2020
Dear Sisters in the League and Bishop Stephen Jensen,
Welcome back and thank you for saying “yes” to the League by continuing to stay on for another year as provincial chairpersons of communications. I have genuinely enjoyed working with you for the past two years and I look forward to continuing to work with you. Together, we form the best communication team the League has, thanks to you! One positive aspect of an extended term it that we know our roles and responsibilities and, moving forward, we can improve our positions, making communications better for everyone we encounter. Thank you! Please “cc” me with your communiques and newsletters. I like to see them. If I can help, please contact me.
The Canadian League Magazine: The fall edition will be delivered near the end of October. The theme for the fall issue is the League’s 100 years of dedication and sisterhood. It will be slightly larger than normal so I pray all members will take the time to read and enjoy the content.
Online Speakers Series: Wasn’t that terrific? While members were not able to meet in convention, they were able to stay informed by listening to the wonderful speakers. Urge your counterparts to encourage members to let the board know what they thought of the series. If they enjoyed it, they might consider donating to the National Bursary Fund. For members who were unable to view the series, it may be accessed via the national website at cwl.ca. Scroll down “In the News” to the August 18th post titled Summer Speaker Series. Clicking on it will take the member to a page where she may choose the presentation she would like to view.
Implementation Committee: Review the updates on the national website cwl.ca. for July and August. Have you encouraged your counterparts to view the new Welcome Program Video? It is awesome. These are exciting times! More volunteers will be needed to participate in working and focus groups, complete surveys and answer questionnaires. The committee will be reaching out for volunteers in February 2021 through the website, Facebook page and magazine, with new working groups forming in April 2021. In the meantime, prayer for courage to stay the course and for members to say “yes” to year three work! Are members God’s hands and feet on earth? If so, how will they say yes? Have you invited them to participate?
Pornography Hurts Campaign: Child pornography is on the rise. At this time when many members are at home, encourage them to express their views by using the Pornography Hurts postcards found on the national website, using the search engine and entering “pornography hurts”.
The following resolutions dealing with pornography and related issues:
• 2017.02 Mandatory Age Verification Mechanisms for Adult Pornographic Websites
• 2004.11 Link Between Violent, Graphic Imagery and Aggressive Behaviour and the Mechanics of Killing
• 2002.11 Responsible Internet Use for Children
• 2000.06 Violence in Music Lyrics
• 2000.05 Violence on Television as It Relates to Children
• 1998.02 Deviant Sex Establishments/Businesses
Encourage members to act by hosting a letter writing campaign on one or more of the items above.
A PRAYER FOR JOURNALISTS
St. Francis de Sales,
Patron Saint of writers and journalists
Almighty God,
Strengthen and direct, we pray,
the will of all whose work it is to write what many read,
and to speak where many listen.
May we be bold to confront evil and injustice:
Understanding and compassionate of human weakness;
Rejecting alike the half-truth which deceives,
And the slanted word which corrupts.
May the power, which is ours, for good or ill,
Always be used with honesty and courage,
With respect and integrity,
So that when all here has been written, said and done,
We may, unashamed, meet Thee face to face.
Amen
