Fr. Godfrey's Homily
OT25A 2020
St. Benedict Cathedral
Band members strive to march from spot to spot artfully without running into anyone else, all while keeping the music going. It’s just a series of moves. But for the people sitting high in the stands, the big picture is visible, the artistry is clear: all of those people moving from place to place create an experience of lines and arcs and sounds. And that big picture is breathtaking.
The jealous early vineyard workers miss the big picture altogether. Their horizon ends with their own well-being. But the landowner is concerned for the big picture of the harvest. If they’d only been able to see the bigger picture!
Brothers and sisters, what is the bigger picture for us? It is the heavenly kingdom. What big picture should govern every one of our decisions? Our desire for heaven; Christ’s promise of redemption.
And that bigger picture is the purpose of stewardship. Soon, we’ll receive our commitment cards, outward expressions of our investment in building the Church – the mission of all the baptized. I hope and pray that you won’t merely hold steady, but that you’ll ask yourself, in prayer, what more God might be asking of you this year. We’re hoping for a 3.5% increase in giving. But we’re also in need of all kinds of generous talent to make our parish work. And it all must be grounded in our time with God, in prayer. Stewards of God’s gifts: let’s step forward for building the Kingdom of Christ. Let’s do what we can to bring in the harvest of justice. Let’s share generously what we have gratefully received. Then we’ll see the big picture unfolding before us, no mere field show, but the promise of eternal life.
