Dear Parishioners,
Back when I was living in Brainerd, and we were planning an addition onto St. Francis Church, we made the decision to permanently install an HD camera in the Church. The goal was two-fold: To be able to have a livestream that we could broadcast anywhere in our parish complex, should we have overflowing crowds such as at Easter and Christmas, and to be able to help all those who were homebound to be able to participate in Mass in their own parish. And so, we developed a high-quality livestream. Who knew that all of us would become the homebound.
Most parishes were caught off guard by the pandemic. Facebook Live became the vehicle through which most people saw the Mass taking place at their parish. But that approach was very limited. Both picture and sound quality were poor. And once people came back for Mass, the use of microphones made things even worse. Bishop Peter, when he was still here in Duluth, made the decision to go with an HD system in the Cathedral similar to the one we had in Brainerd. When I came, all we had to do was implement the plan! I can now tell you that now we have begun livestreaming a quality picture and sound at the Cathedral!
We will livestream one Mass per day: the weekday Masses, Saturday evening at 5PM and Sunday at 10:30AM. We are also able to livestream other events too, like our First Communions this past weekend, or Confirmation coming up. That way people even far away will be able to participate. We are talking about the possibility of even including weddings and funerals. If you go to our website you will notice on the front page that there are two ways to access the livestream: by clicking on the “Livestream” link in the upper left-hand corner, or the link that is much larger to the right. There is also a link at the bottom of the weekly newsletter. I hope you will check out the livestream, and please tell others about this new opportunity.
