Did you know?
Precious gems held great significance in ancient times, both in the Jewish, religious realm and the secular realm.
The Birthstone has its origin in the Breastplate of Aaron described in the Old Testament (Exodus 28). This breastplate had 12 gemstones: one for each of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Over the years certain stones were attributed to certain months and became birthstones. For many centuries the Church has assigned a patron saint and a virtue to each precious stone to help us sanctify our lives through practicing virtue and prayer with Saints.
Throughout the months of this Faith Formation year we will be reflecting on the meaning of precious stones and how they can help us increase our Catholic Faith.
