My dear friends of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish,
Despite the rain, I hope you have had a good three-day weekend: Happy Columbus Day!
This summer, when it was not prudent for me to travel to family here in the States, I took a road trip and visited the reconstructed house of Christopher Columbus in Genoa (photo attached - I have a few more pictures I would like to share, but I think Flocknote only allows me to attach one...consider yourselves lucky!). Such pilgrimages I have always found both meaningful and memorable.
May I offer for your reading an article from 2017 by the Knights of Columbus on Christopher Columbus and more contemporary views concerning his person. The Order's founder from 1882, soon-to-be Blessed Father Michael McGivney, "believed the explorer represented both Catholicism and patriotism at the very root of America’s heritage, thereby symbolizing that faithful Catholics also can be solid American citizens":
It was a blessing on Saturday to pray the Rosary from my room with a number of devoted parishioners who gathered near the statue of Our Blessed Lady. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this powerful intercessory prayer!
This week I hope to get tested for the virus as I hope to be able to complete quarantine by the evening of October 21st.
Have a blessed eve!
In Jesus and Mary,
Msgr. Luke Sweeney
