“Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.”
Isn’t it easy to plan for an event when we know when the event will take place? What about an event that we do not know when it will take place? It seems this can sometimes be much more difficult to plan for. Do we plan and take action today? Or do we wait until tomorrow or next week or ten years from now? The truth is no one knows when the end time will come, but we do know our lives are finite and will be over in the blink of an eye as compared to the entirety of time. With the stakes of the event in this case being eternal life it would seem appropriate to always be ready to always be watchful to always be alert, as Jesus said to his disciples. But this can be much harder in practice than in words. What can we do to be watchful, to be alert?
Maybe spending 10-15 minutes a day in quiet prayer time can get us closer? Maybe attending Mass during the week can help? Maybe pondering on the fact that our life could end at any moment and we are not promised tomorrow could help? There are many ways to put practices in our life to ensure we are always watchful, that we are always alert, for we do not want the Lord to “come suddenly and find you sleeping” but that He may find us awake, and alert, and ready to enter into His kingdom forever!
