The St Benilde Parish St Vincent de Paul conference (St Vincent de Paul Society - Metairie Chapter) was incorporated in 1983. The Society is a 501C3 nonprofit corporation. For 37 years Vincentians have been helping needy people and families in our area with emergency food, utility payments, medical expenses, rent, and other necessities.
In the SVDP Society, there are three levels of membership - active, associate, and contributing. Active members meet regularly and assist clients with their current needs. Associate members help with special events such as the annual Walk for the Poor, the Thanksgiving food drive, and the Christmas gift delivery. Finally, contributing members are those who continue to support the Society through donations of food and money. Most of the financial support received is through donations made in the "Poor Box" located in the vestibule of the church. However, many other organizations (Mens' Club, Chers Amis, etc.) contribute financially to the Society as well. These funds for the Society are separate from St Benilde Church.
In addition to the abovementioned relief, food is also donated by parishioners, parents, St Benilde School students, members of the Men's' Club, and other organizations such as the Grandparents Club and the Chers Amis.
During the fiscal year ending September 1, 2020, the Society spent $28,400.00 helping 296 people. We distributed 217 large boxes of food. In addition food, gift cards, and gifts were distributed to families at Thanksgiving and Christmas last year.
Currently, 30 needy families have been identified for the 2020 Thanksgiving and Christmas programs. The Giving Tree will be placed in the vestibule of the church shortly after Thanksgiving.
We truly appreciate the generous support given to the Society which allows us to meet the needs of many people in our area. If you are interested in getting involved as an active, associate, or contributing member, please contact Preston Cifreo at 504-284-8393. We welcome any and all new volunteers.
