CHEERS! - A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
Cheers!
Cheers! It was nice to have a mid-week holiday last week (Veterans Day); it was also refreshing to have some rain fall — after a 200-day dry spell (which broke the previous record of 150 days!).
Several months ago, I was asked by Bishop George Leo Thomas to accept a seminarian from Nigeria, who is currently studying in Frankfurt, Germany for the Archdiocese of Hamburg.
He was supposed to arrive in September, but because of strict travel regulations in Europe and more complicated visa laws, he has been detained until now. Thus, he should arrive in Las Vegas within a week or ten days.
I have been asked — with the help of our Staff and parishioners — to mentor Godwin Anyanwu. He has actually completed all his academic studies and so, could be ordained a deacon and a priest —maybe—sometime next year. Most likely, he will need a semester at a U.S. seminary to take some “practicums” , that is, how to celebrate Sacraments. Godwin’s parents moved to Las Vegas sometime ago and are members of St. Anthony of Padua parish.
I know that we will welcome Godwin warmly to Holy Spirit. Here is a letter he wrote for the bulletin.
My name is Godwin Anyanwu from Imo State, Nigeria. I was born into a good Catholic family on the 9th of June 1987.
I started my seminary formation/studies in Nigeria and received a dual bachelor’s degree in Arts and Philosophy at the Claretian Institute of Philosophy Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, an affiliate of Imo State University Owerri and Pontifical Urban University Rome. I worked in different parishes in the eastern part of Nigeria and also as a language instructor for Deutsch and English at the Jomaris Education & Travels Owerri, Alliance française Owerri and Goethe Institute Lagos State, Nigeria.
I moved to Germany and received my Master’s degree in Catholic theology at the Graduate School of philosophy and theology, Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt on the Main and worked in different parishes for the Archdiocese of Hamburg.
I’m so blessed to be assigned to your parish Holy Spirit Catholic Parish Las Vegas and privileged to serve Fr. Bill Kenny and the entire parishioners of this spirit-filled parish.
I hope to learn a lot from Fr. Bill Kenny and the parishioners and contribute my best in service to God and you all. Thank you very much for accepting me as I look forward to knowing your community more.
Welcome, Godwin!
Please check the bulletin for our Advent Retreat —“For Goodness Sake”. Sister Karen and I are giving it on Saturday, December 5, in the Church, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Only $20.00; bring your own lunch. Register through the Church Office.
Have a good week. God bless you.
Fr. Bill
