In today’s gospel Jesus comes upon two brothers, Simon and Andrew, who were casting their nets into the sea. Jesus says to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” What faith the two brothers had, to drop everything, leave their families, livelihood and all they have known to follow Jesus on an unknown path. Jesus also called out to James and John, who were repairing nets with their father. They, too, followed Jesus. To me, that is faith. It is hard for me to imagine to leave the important parts of my life, my family, my friends, and my home. I have worked hard for these things. They are who I am and who I love, they give me a source of security and well being.
I wonder what Jesus is asking me to do in this passage? To leave my current life? I don’t think so. I believe He is asking me to have faith that He will lead me and all of us, to a deeper and more meaningful relationship with Him, just as he led Simon, Andrew, James and John. But I have to make the choice to follow Him. When the day comes I will leave all these things I treasure here on earth to follow Him. I pray that I may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
