Dear Parishioners,
Next Sunday, November 29, we begin the Season of Advent. The word “Advent” is from the Latin “Adventus,” which means “coming.” Advent is the beginning of a new liturgical year (in the Western churches), and encompasses the span of time from the fourth Sunday before Christmas until the Nativity of Our Lord is celebrated.
Like Lent, Advent is a preparatory season. It has significance because it is a season of looking forward and waiting for something greater — both for the annual celebration of the event of Christ's birth, and for the time when Christ will come again.
Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 5, when we will welcome Archbishop Rozanski to the Cathedral for a Advent afternoon of recollection. It will begin at 1:00 pm and include a reflection by the Archbishop, time for prayer, Sacrament of Penance and Eucharistic Adoration. If you are unable to be present, please be with us via our livestream at cathedralstl.org/live.
Abraham Lincoln declared November 26, 1863—the last Thursday in November—a Day of Thanksgiving. The Battle of Gettysburg, in early July of 1863, had cost some 50,000 American casualties, and the sacrifice moved President Lincoln: " . . . When I went to Gettysburg and saw the graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and there consecrated myself to Christ."
During that time of internal strife in the United States, and at this turning point in his own spiritual life, President Lincoln called for prayer and thanksgiving for the nation, saying in part, ". . . It is announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord . . . It has seemed to me fit and proper that . . . God's blessings should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people."

This Weekend's Pulpit Announcements
In gratefulness for all blessings bestowed upon us as a people of faith, please join us later this week for our special Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 26. This will be the only Mass offered at the Cathedral Basilica on Thanksgiving Day.
On Saturday, December 5, we will welcome Archbishop Rozanski to the Cathedral for his first Advent Day of Recollection. Please refer to your bulletins for details.
The beautiful poinsettias and greenery that adorn our Cathedral are a special part of the celebration of Christmas at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. We invite all parishioners and visitors to share in the experience this year through a memorial or thanksgiving gift by purchasing one or more of the poinsettias decorating the Nativity Scene or the Baptismal Font. Order forms may be found in your bulletin, or you may call the rectory office for more information.
Finally, remember to make reservations for Mass at the Cathedral this Christmas. Please refer to your bulletins for a full schedule of Masses and instructions for registering.

Wearing of Masks
Just a quick reminder that masks are to be worn at all times while in the Cathedral Basilica (except for the reception of Holy Communion). It is important that the mask covers both your nose and your mouth to prevent the spread of a virus.
