This week in the Bulletin:
A NOTE FROM YOUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
I have sweet memories of Thanksgiving as a child. I continue to look forward to this celebration. The food and the family are at the center of the celebration.
When we were children, Dad would wake us up to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. He said, “I turned on the TV 20 minutes ago to warm it up.” (The vacuum tubes in that Black & White set needed a few minutes of power before displaying a picture!)
Some Thanksgivings were not typical. My parents were registered nurses. Often, Mom would have shifts in OB at St. Joseph’s Hospital, or Dad would be giving anesthesia at Kino Hospital over the holiday. We waited for Thanksgiving dinner. The two of them might not have the same day free till Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Plus, we could never travel to be with grandparents. Mom and Dad would make long-distance telephone calls for us to greet them and our aunts and uncles.
This year, we all will have our holiday plans disrupted. I will share your disappointment. We wish that it were safe for people to travel and to gather in large groups.
My childhood experience helps me deal with a 2020 holiday that is not picture-perfect. I learned that Thanksgiving is more than a perfect dinner. It is a unique American tradition to express gratitude to God for a good harvest (and all God’s gifts). It is a concern for the less fortunate that moves us to feed the hungry. Thanksgiving is love and appreciation for family and friends. From the memory of Native Americans and Pilgrims who worked together in the midst of hardship, we are inspired to be resilient.
God bless you,
Father Patrick M. Crino Pastor.
St. Vincent de Paul 5th Sunday Collection
The Second Collection for the November 29th Weekend Masses will be offered for serving the needs of the poor within our parish by your St. Vincent de Paul Society. Although we remain in lockdown, your Sts. Peter & Paul Conference of St. Vincent de Paul has continued unabated in serving those in need.
The need for food, housing assistance, utilities, furniture, and other basic needs has been increasing. During this pandemic, we have been able to continue service to the poor through the generous contributions of our parishioners at Sts. Peter & Paul.
We ask for your continued support through prayers and through your contributions this upcoming weekend, when the 5th Sunday second collection proceeds go directly to St. Vincent de Paul.
Thank you, and may God continue to richly bless you.
