Fr. Godfrey's Homily
Christ the King A 2020
St. Benedict Cathedral
Imagine the lonely, fearsome darkness Helen Keller knew. Unable to speak or see, what a miracle she encountered at the age of six when it dawned on her that objects had names and names were words and she could learn those words. As she learned this basic system, the world opened for her. Without seeing, she saw. Without hearing, she heard.
Jesus’ parable couldn’t be simpler. Give to ME as I am hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, ill, imprisoned. The eternal world of paradise is opened for those who do.
Don’t we wish for the eternal world of paradise? Don’t we desire an end to our blindness and deafness? Then we must serve Him in those in need. Maybe we’ll take a dove from the Dove Tree or contribute to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. But what if our teacher, Jesus, is trying to lead us out of our own crushing silence and enclosing darkness? What if we don’t only serve the least of our brothers and sisters, but realize that we ARE the least of them in our own ways? Then we will know the unity of a Kingdom where God Himself hung lifeless on a cross, where the King bent low to wash fishermen’s feet, where the Almighty's strength is in forgiving. When we are the least of His brothers and sisters, then we will rely on Him and His disciples, for life and light and the sound of joy. From our poverty, we will see the world, we will hear the songs of His Kingdom!
