The U.S. bishops are leading our sixth annual Fortnight for Freedom from June 21-July 4. Join us for fourteen days of prayer and action to protect religious liberty in our country. This year’s theme is Freedom for Mission.
Day 1: What is Religious Liberty?
The Catholic Church teaches that “the human person has a right to religious freedom.” This freedom means that it is always wrong for anyone to force a person “to act in a manner contrary to his own beliefs, whether privately or publicly, whether alone or in association with others, within due limits.” (Dignitatis Humanae, No. 2.)
Religious liberty is protected in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and in federal and state laws. Religious liberty includes more than our freedom to go to Mass on Sunday or pray the Rosary at home; it includes freedom to serve the common good of all Americans in ways that are consistent with Catholic teaching.
What can I do?
Pray for the passage of the new law, the Conscience Protection Act of 2017
Take action: Now is the time to contact Congress and advocate for the protection of life and freedom of conscience.
Please take a moment to let your members of Congress know that we expect them to protect our most cherished liberties.
